The First Flight of the Wright Brothers

Personnel: Narrator, two Wright Brothers, any number of onlookers

Narrator reads story as the Wright Brothers and participants pantomime actions.

Narrator:

This is the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright.

(Wright brothers enter, wave to the audience, and shake hands with each other.)

They had a dream, to build a machine that could take flight.

(Wright brothers pretend to build plane, pointing to the sky, tinkering with parts, etc.)

Their curious neighbors came to watch the brothers.

(Onlookers enter, watch the brothers.)

It’ll never fly, they told each other.

(Onlookers point and laugh.)

But Orville and Wilbur believed they could.

(Wright brothers shake hands, point skyward, nod.)

So they tried their best, as they knew they should.

(One brother pantomimes the act of piloting the plane and flies off stage. The other brother runs off chasing him. Onlookers look at each other in amazement.)

It only took a minute, and flew a short, short way

(Brothers enter, shake hands with each other as the crowd cheers.)

But Wilbur and Orville Wright changed travel as we know it today.

(Orville and Wilbur bow, and shake hands with the crowd.)

So when you see the big jets roar through the sky.

Thank Orville and Wilbur and their dream that wouldn’t die.
