Smoke Detector Batteries

Safe and Smart

This Tiger Tuesday we take a look at the Safe and Smart Adventure.

Checking and changing the batteries in you smoke detectors on a regular basis is very good practice. Many homes now have the smoke detectors wired directly into the electrical supply. But, if the power goes out, you battery is the item that may save your life.

In our home, we change the batteries ones a year in the month of October. Depending on the battery, you should get a full years worth of charge to protect you and your family in the event that you have a house fire.

Testing the battery in your smoke detector throughout the year is fairly easy. Push the test button on the smoke detector and you will hear a chirp / alarm. If you do not hear anything, chances are you need to replace the battery. Most smoke detectors have a safety setting that if the battery becomes too low the smoke detector will chirp… and chirp… and chirp non stop until you replace the battery.
