Basketball Signals

Basketball Signals

The Webelos / AOL Sports Adventure has us taking a look at different signals for different sports. We’re going to focus on basketball.

In basketball there will be 1 lead referee and one or two umpires. In the NBA and college basketball you will see a three person crew. In my son’s city league team there is usually a two person crew. And, when playing church ball there is usually only one referee.

All these referees communicate to each other, the score table, media, and audience through whistles and signals.

Some of the signals include the following:

  • Start Clock

  • Full Timeout

  • Thirty Second Timeout

  • Jump Ball

  • Substitutions

  • Charge

  • Hand Check

  • Blocking

  • Holding

  • Pushing

  • Intentional Foul

  • Technical Foul

  • Double Foul

  • Illegal Hand Use

  • Carrying

  • Double Dribble

  • Three Seconds

  • Five Seconds

  • Ten Seconds

  • Kicking the Ball

  • Two Point Basket

  • Three Point Basket

  • Counting

  • Basket Counts

  • Basket Does Not Count

  • Bonus Free Throws

  • Lane Violation

  • Conclusion
