Showing Respect To The Flag

The flag is flown on public buildings everyday when weather permits. Some citizens fly it at  home everyday, too.

It should be flown especially on New Year's Day, Inauguration Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's birthday, Washington's birthday, Easter Sunday, Mother's Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day (half-staff until noon, full-staff to sunset), Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Constitution Day, Columbus Day, Navy day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. It is also flown on other days proclaimed by the President, on the birthdays of states (dates of admission to the Union), and on state holidays.

The flag can be attached to the halyard with two half hitches. A safer method makes use of the two snap hooks.

It takes two people to hoist and lower the flag correctly. One person holds the flag. The other person attaches it to the halyard and Hoist the flag, keeping it close to the pole by holding the line rather than taught (see hand position in the illustration above). Finally fasten the  halyard to the cleat on the pole.

Saluting The Flag

Give the Cub Scout salute when:

  • The flag is being hoisted or lowered

  • The flag passes by or you pass the flag. In a parade, salute just before the flag passes and hold it until the flag has gone by.

  • You recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

If you are not in uniform, greet the flag by placing your right hand over your heart. Take off your hat if you are wearing one.
